5 Tips for Introducing Your Kids to Miniature Wargaming

Griffin and I played a large game of Warhammer 40.000 on Saturday. Its been great to see how far he has progressed in not only his painting but in his knowledge and understanding of the rules. We started playing when he was 6 and he used his MineCraft figures to play and his name for the game was " I win" A little over a year later and he was helping me build model kits to start his own collection. Fast forward to today and he has a large collection of miniatures he has built and painted himself. So don't be afraid to share your love for the hobby. Are you a miniature wargaming enthusiast and want to share your passion with your kids? Introducing your little ones to this exciting hobby can be a fun and rewarding experience for the whole family. But where do you start? What age is the right age? And what games should you try? Don't worry, we've got you covered with these 5 tips for introducing your kids to miniature wargaming.
1. Start at the Right Age
One of the most common questions parents have is what age is the right age to start introducing their kids to miniature wargaming. While there is no one-size-fits-all answer, most children start showing an interest in strategy games around the age of 8 or 9. However, every child is different, so it's important to gauge their interest and readiness before diving in.
2. Choose Age-Appropriate Games
When it comes to selecting games for your kids, it's essential to choose ones that are age-appropriate and easy to understand. Look for games with simple rules and mechanics that can be easily grasped by young minds. Some popular options for younger children include Warhammer Underworlds, Star Wars: Legion, and Bolt Action: Tank War.
3. Start with Starter Sets
Starter sets are a great way to introduce your kids to miniature wargaming. These sets usually come with everything you need to get started, including miniatures, rulebooks, and dice. They are designed to be beginner-friendly and provide a smooth learning curve for new players. Starting with a starter set will help your kids ease into the hobby without feeling overwhelmed.
4. Make it a Family Affair
Miniature wargaming is not just for kids! Get the whole family involved by organizing family game nights or tournaments. This will not only strengthen the bond between family members but also create lasting memories. Encourage your kids to invite their friends over for gaming sessions, fostering social interaction and teamwork.
5. Emphasize Fun and Creativity
Remember, the most important aspect of introducing your kids to miniature wargaming is to have fun and encourage their creativity. Let them paint their own miniatures and create their own stories and scenarios. This will not only spark their imagination but also develop their critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
So, whether your kids are just starting to show an interest in miniature wargaming or you want to nurture their love for the hobby, these 5 tips will help you get started on the right foot. Remember to choose age-appropriate games, start with starter sets, involve the whole family, and most importantly, have fun!
