3 Miniature Wargames I’m Excited to Play in 2025

2025 is shaping up to be a fantastic year for miniature wargaming! With new releases and updates from beloved franchises, there's plenty for both seasoned players and newcomers to get excited about. Here are three miniature wargames that have caught our eye and why we can’t wait to dive in.

1. Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings by Para Bellum Games

Conquest is a large-scale rank-and-file fantasy wargame that has steadily gained popularity over the last few years. With beautifully detailed miniatures and a deep, tactical ruleset, it offers an experience that’s both engaging and immersive. In 2025, Para Bellum Games is rolling out expansions to existing factions and possibly introducing new ones. They’ve also teased narrative campaigns that will allow players to shape the world of Eä in their own games.

Why I’m Excited: Conquest delivers on the promise of epic fantasy battles with a ruleset that’s easy to learn but hard to master. The game's alternating activation system keeps every phase dynamic, ensuring both players stay engaged. We cant say enough about this game. I am hooked on the rank and flank style and the mechanics of this game. The rule set is easy to pick up and yet there are so many strategies and little nuances that you can master and employ to your advantage. We have found that timing is key when trying to pull off the perfect move in this game and it is so very satisfying when it does. Simply put this game is Fun!!!

Easy Starting Point: New players can jump in with the "Conquest: First Blood" starter set. It’s a skirmish version of the main game, offering a smaller-scale introduction to the world and mechanics. These smaller sets allow you pick and choose your factions and get a feel for the game without breaking the bank. The smaller model counts also make for faster gameplay and use a smaller play space. Griffin and I started out on a small card table using books and bottle as terrain. All of the tactical gameplay and rules are present in this skirmish style setup and make a really fun entry point to the hobby as a whole.

2. Warmachine (New Edition)

SteamForged Games has reimagined Warmachine for the latest edition, and it’s looking incredible. Known for its steampunk-inspired setting, Warmachine pits warcasters and their massive warjacks against one another in intense, tactical battles. The 2025 edition promises streamlined rules and redesigned models to bring fresh energy to the franchise.

Why I’m Excited: Warmachine’s combination of strategy and synergy between warcasters, warjacks, and units has always been a standout feature. The new edition’s focus on accessibility means it’ll be easier than ever for new players to get involved while offering exciting changes for long-time fans. This is the game that started it all for and for Griffin even though he wasn't old enough to start enjoying it just yet. I remember him making up his own rule cards and stat sheets for his Pokemon figures and playing against my small Protectorate of Menoth forces. These were some of the very first miniatures I built and painted. Really looking forward to breaking them back out again and adding to the collection. Fast gameplay and quick play rules make this game a must try!

Easy Starting Point: The "Starter Warcaster Packs" are an affordable way for beginners to learn the ropes. Each pack includes a warcaster, a few warjacks, and basic units—everything you need to play small-scale games.

3. Halo: Flashpoint

The Halo universe is finally getting the tabletop treatment it deserves with Halo: Flashpoint. Published by Spartan Games in collaboration with 343 Industries, this game combines beloved Halo lore with strategic wargaming. Players will command iconic factions like the UNSC, Covenant, and Banished in intense battles across the galaxy.

Why I’m Excited: As a long-time Halo fan, I can’t wait to see how the game captures the essence of this sci-fi universe. With modular terrain and unique faction mechanics, it’s shaping up to be both thematic and mechanically rich. We have the starter sets in house and will be getting in our First games soon. Can't wait to share our thoughts with you on this one. Griffin grew up playing the newer video games and loves the battle royal feel of the "RED VS BLUE" Stay tuned here for our in depth breakdown.

Easy Starting Point: The "Halo: Flashpoint Core Box" is a great entry point. It features pre-assembled miniatures, a simplified ruleset, and everything you need to recreate epic battles on your tabletop.

Final Thoughts

These three games represent a diverse mix of genres and playstyles, ensuring there’s something for every miniature wargaming enthusiast in 2025. Whether you’re drawn to Conquest’s grand battles, Warmachine’s strategic duels, or Halo: Flashpoint’s sci-fi skirmishes, the year ahead promises countless hours of tabletop fun.
